What Is A Baby Monitor?

A baby monitor is used to listen out to the sounds made by a baby or young child while they are in another room. They can also be known as a baby alarm. In their simplest form they typically consist of a battery powered transmitter and receiver – the transmitter is located in the same room as the baby and the receiver is located in the vicinity of the parents/carers.

The baby monitor transmitter unit will have a built in microphone so that it can listen to the baby’s sounds and this unit is placed close enough to the child that noises can be detected. The baby monitor receiver unit located close to the carer will have a speaker so that the carer can listen for the sounds the baby makes.

There are many variations and different types of baby monitor including bi-directional which allow the carer to talk back to the baby and some even play music to the baby. With the progression of technology, video baby monitors allow the baby to be seen as well as heard. It is even possible to view the images of your baby via the internet, anywhere in the world!

Why Do I Need A Baby Monitor?

A baby monitor is mainly used whilst a baby or young child is asleep in their crib. It allows the parent or carer to carry on their daily routine without the worry of checking on the infant frequently. This means that the infant does not need to be in the same room as the carer while they are asleep, thus getting a restful sleep in a quiet room in a different part of the home.

By having the baby monitor receiver unit close by, the carer can carry on their daily routine such as housework, watching the television or maybe having a meal while the baby is asleep. The baby monitor provides peace of mind for the carer, safe in the knowledge that they can hear the baby at all times.

So when the baby awakes the carer will hear this for themselves via the baby monitor receiver unit thus allowing them to attend to the baby immediately. There is no need for the carer to be in hearing distance of the infant so the child could be in a room peacefully sleeping that is quiet and away from the daily household activities.

There is no evidence that a baby monitor can help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and should not be used as a substitute for regularly checking on your baby if you at all concerned about their health and wellbeing. SIDS, also known as crib death or cot death is the unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year.
