What Are Digital Baby Monitors And What Is DECT?
In today’s digital age there are all kinds of digital gadgets and electronic devices.
There are digital devices in childcare for watching over and monitoring your baby,
namely wireless digital baby monitors. So what are they and are they better than
the older traditional analog type baby monitor?
Baby monitors simply consist of a transmitter device and receiver. The transmitter
is placed near to the baby, usually whilst they are asleep in their crib and the
receiver is situated close to the parent or carer elsewhere in the house.
Analog baby monitors use FM modulation (radio waves) to communicate the signal wirelessly
between transmitter and receiver. However, there are known problems and issues with
this type of technology, namely interference from items such as household appliances
like microwaves, cordless phones, radios as well as your neighors appliances also.
To solve the issue of interference some baby monitor companies have developed the
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard for baby monitors.
Just like DECT cordless phones, this technology eliminates interference from other
wireless equipment and ensures privacy. Communication is via ‘pulsed’ data sent
digitally from the transmitter to the receiver whereas the older analog technology
uses a higher level of slightly more harmful FM waves.
DECT baby monitors are not harmful to the child and the levels of power used to
communicate with a digital system are extremely low however, some manufacturers
recommend positioning the baby monitor around one yard away from the baby.
