Wireless Vs Wired Baby Monitors - Which Is Best?

Baby monitors are an extremely useful parental monitoring aid and like most other electronic gadgets have developed considerably over the last few years. The simple baby alarm transmitter/receiver system has moved on and there are many more choices of baby monitor available for parents. Originally we had the wired baby monitor but the wireless baby monitor is fast becoming a popular choice due to its flexibility and portability.

Quite simply, baby monitors are either wireless or wired electronic devices. As the name implies, wired baby monitors use wires to connect the key parts of the system, namely the transmitter and receiver. The advantage of the wired system is that there is no chance of any external interference like that of the wireless system. It is very reliable in operation and often does not require batteries as the units plug into the house power supply.

However, there are several disadvantages. A wired baby monitor system will have to be installed which means running cables around your house. This is ok if you are a keen DIY’er otherwise you will have to employ a tradesman to carry out the work which could be costly. Secondly, the fixed location of the transmitter and receiver units does not provide any mobility thus restricting the room is which the baby is laid to rest as well as the receiver being in one location. If you are not in the same location as the receiver (e.g. out the in garden or yard), you will not be able to hear your baby crying for help.

Fortunately a wireless baby monitoring system addresses these issues to provide far more flexibility. You can move freely around your house or garden either carrying the receiver unit or setting it down in another room. There is no installation required – simply pop the batteries in and switch on – no messing around with fiddly wiring. The system can simply be up and running within a couple of minutes.

Wireless baby monitors give you the freedom to move around your home with the confidence that you will always be able to hear your baby. Some receiver units can be hung around the neck thus freeing up both hands for doing the daily chores such as washing the dishes or ironing. Of course, your baby does not always have to be put to sleep in the same room as the transmitter device. Your baby can go to sleep in any room and the transmitter simply moved to the same room.

Another great advantage of a wireless baby monitor is not only the portability around the home, but portability when you are visiting friends or relatives. You can stop away from home for the weekend and take your monitor system with you. Something that is near impossible with a wired system.

There are one or two disadvantages of a wireless system and the main one being the interference of the older analog type monitors. It’s possible that wireless phones or routers could affect the operation of the unit. Also, interference from a neighboring house could be a problem. However, with advancing technology, DECT (or digital) wireless baby monitors virtually eliminate all interference so it’s no longer a problem. Another issue is the range could be a problem if you have a very large house. Finally, these units will need their batteries replacing from time to time.
